Cognitive Ability Testing and Employment Selection: Does Test Content Relate to Adverse Impact?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Cognitive ability tests are commonly used in the employment selection process. Despite their criterion-related validity, they also demonstrate adverse impact (Campbell, 1996; Hartigan & Wigdor, 1989; Hunter & Hunter, 1984). This study assessed two cognitive ability tests (one with verbal, numeric and spatial subtests the General Aptitude Test Battery and the other predominantly spatial the Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices) as selection tools for police constable applicants with a specific focus on adverse impact. Both the Raven’s Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) and General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB) demonstrated adverse impact against minority candidates. Implications for research and practice on the use of cognitive ability testing in employment selection are discussed. __________________________________________________________________________________

Measuring Human Intelligence with Artificial Intelligence Adaptive Item Generation
Adaptive item generation may be the next innovation in intelligence testing. In adaptive item generation, the optimally informative item is developed anew for the examinee during the test. Reminiscent of computer versus person chess games, the computer generates the next item based on the previous pattern of the examinee's responses. Adaptive item generation requires the merger of two lines of ...

متن کاملExplaining the black-white gap in cognitive test scores: Toward a theory of adverse impact.
In understanding the causes of adverse impact, a key parameter is the Black-White difference in cognitive test scores. To advance theory on why Black-White cognitive ability/knowledge test score gaps exist, and on how these gaps develop over time, the current article proposes an inductive explanatory model derived from past empirical findings. According to this theoretical model, Black-White gr...
متن کاملCognitive Ability Testing and Adverse Impact in Selection: Meta-analytic Evidence of Reductions in Black-White Differences in Ability Test Scores Over Time Authors
Black-White differences in cognitive ability test (CAT) performance were examined metaanalytically in this study. The primary purpose was to test a cultural/developmental theory of differences in CAT performance, which proposes that such differences arise because of educational, social, and economic inequality between ethnic groups. Controlling for sampling effects, meta-analyses revealed a nar...
